Getting started with RetentionX is straightforward. Once your data is imported, we preload your account with analytics and insights. To unlock the full value, you’ll implement server-side tracking, connect your tech stack, and configure a few key settings. Follow the setup checklist below to get started.
Setup Checklist
Some setup steps depend on your plan. Wherever relevant, we’ll indicate which plan a step applies to, so you can easily focus on what’s relevant to your account.
Please note that most of these steps must be completed by account administrators.
Step 1: Activate your Account
Connect your store and start syncing data with RetentionX.
☐ After you've activated your account and decided on a plan, invite your colleagues and assign them roles and permissions. You can optionally enable two-factor authentication for all users to add an additional layer of security.
☐ Connect your store with RetentionX by either directly integrating with Shopify or for all other eCommerce platforms by setting up a data feed.
☐ Schedule your onboarding call with your Account Strategist, who will support you during the setup and help ensure you unlock value quickly.
☐ If you manage multiple Shopify stores across different locations, you can consolidate all data into a single RetentionX account. RX Core & Growth
Step 2: Implement RX Tracking RX Core & Growth
Set up RetentionX’s conversion tracking and identity resolution.
If you’re not using Shopify or are running a headless setup, please contact us before starting the implementation. These setups require a different approach and development resources on your end.
☐ Connect your Google Analytics 4 account and grant all requested permissions shown during the authentication process.
☐ Implement the RX Pixel to lay the foundation for RetentionX’s conversion tracking and site merchandising.
☐ Accelerate identity resolution by implementing the RX Identifier in your ESP, allowing RetentionX to immediately recognize customers when they click your email campaigns or flows.
Step 3: Configure Your Account
Customize your account settings to align with your business needs.
☐ Review our default gross and net revenue definitions and adjust them as needed.
☐ Customize how we process your data and visualize reporting in your report settings.
☐ Set rules to exclude data on import, such as team members or test orders, so that they do not affect your analyses.
☐ Define order extras, such as gift wrapping or package protection, to ensure that add-ons do not skew your order analyses.
☐ Configure your COGS as they are an important component in calculating your customer's LTV and understanding profitability.
☐ Group unique coupon codes to evaluate the overall effectiveness of your promotions.
☐ Define how our AI-based product recommendations should be generated to match your business model. RX Growth
Step 4: Enrich Your RetentionX account
Add context from third-party platforms to deepen your insights.
☐ Connect your Meta Ads account to import your platform data. RX Core & Growth
☐ Set up the Marketing Channels you want to include in Ad Performance analysis. Make sure all relevant campaigns use UTM parameters so RetentionX can translate your first-party data into the same structure your ad platforms use.
☐ Connect Recharge to analyze the performance of your subscription business.
☐ Analyze your Gorgias support ticket data to identify customers by sentiment and re-engage them more effectively.
Step 5: Set up Conversion APIs RX Core & Growth
Define meaningful conversions and share them with your marketing platforms.
☐ Start by connecting the platforms you want to send conversion data to here.
☐ Set up your Conversion APIs by defining the destination platform and event type, and applying filters to control which conversions are shared.
☐ For Google Conversion APIs, conversion events can only be sent once a corresponding Conversion Action exists in Google.
☐ After pushing conversion events to Meta, approve them in Meta Events Manager and create the corresponding custom events.
Step 6: Enhance Your Data Across Your Tech Stack
Activate customer insights in the tools your teams use.
☐ Share customer insights with your ESP to personalize email & SMS flows and campaigns in Klaviyo, Attentive, Mailchimp, or ActiveCampaign.
☐ Push customer insights to Zendesk to provide your support team with relevant customer context to deliver faster, more personalized service.
☐ Automate customer tagging in Shopify based on their segment affiliation to customize the shopping experience, such as offering early access to key customers.
Step 7: Set up your Email & SMS Flows RX Core & Growth
Trigger smarter Klaviyo flows that turn insights into automated revenue.
☐ Connect your Klaviyo account.
☐ Trigger up to 20% more Browse Abandonment Flows to re-engage shoppers who browsed but didn’t purchase. As RetentionX identifies more users, use RX-powered product view events to remind them of the items they showed interest in and bring them back to buy.
☐ Recover more Abandoned Carts and turn intent into revenue using RX-powered add-to-cart events to remind shoppers of what they left behind and bring them back to complete their purchase.
☐ Bring back high-intent shoppers who started checkout but didn’t finish. RetentionX helps you trigger more Checkout Abandonment Flows through RX-powered checkout events, enabling personalized reminders that close the sale.
☐ Never let customers run out of your products. Set up Replenishment Reminders powered by RetentionX to remind shoppers at the ideal time to restock and encourage repeat purchases.
☐ Re-engage customers who restock less frequently, such as light users or laggards. Use RetentionX’s Late Replenishment Reminder for shoppers who are overdue to reorder and remind them to restock before they churn.
☐ Engage customers before they lapse with winback flows using AI-powered Next Best Offer events from RetentionX. Each event combines the customer's expected next order date and personalized product recommendations to deliver timely, personalized offers. RX Growth
Step 8: Automate your Site Merchandising RX Core & Growth
Optimize your Shopify collection using product insights and smart customizations.
☐ Within 72 hours after the RX Pixel has been implemented, the first data is available in your RetentionX account. Check out the performance of your products per collection here.
☐ Define Custom Collection Sorting Rules that override performance scores, allowing you to optimize your collection pages both strategically and based on performance. You can promote new arrivals, pin specific products, group products by tags, and demote products running out of stock.
☐ Activate auto-sorting on a per-collection basis. For best results, we recommend collecting at least 7 days of data before enabling auto-sorting. This gives our algorithm enough behavioral insight to optimize your collections effectively.
Step 9: Create Segments and Sync Audiences
Identify key customer groups and activate them as audiences.
☐ Create your own customer segments based on purchase behavior, customer quality, and lifecycle stage — or use RetentionX’s templates to get started quickly.
☐ Enable calculations to compute all reports and metrics specifically for each segment, so you can compare performance and identify opportunities.
☐ Convert your customer segments into ready-to-use, daily updated audiences in Google, Meta, TikTok, and Pinterest. Use these audiences to target specific customers, create lookalike audiences, or define exclusion groups.
Step 10: Strategize your Data Insights
Make data-driven decisions to increase profit per customer.
☐ Use our guides and best practices to understand what to look for in your data and how to translate insights into concrete actions.
☐ Reveal your first AI insights to get precise recommendations, along with the direct impact on revenue.
☐ Explore our preset dashboards and create your own. Add your business goals and RetentionX will start tracking your progress.
☐ Set up daily, weekly, or monthly email reports to have your numbers delivered straight to your inbox.
