The Setup Process: 6 Simple Steps
The setup process is simple and consists of six steps to implement tracking for your collection pages and automate your product sorting.
To enhance your Google Analytics tracking, you'll need to add a custom pixel to your Shopify store that will feed your GA account with additional data, such as product impressions and clicks. The pixel is added in a sandbox environment and won't affect your storefront, shop performance, or any other tracking.
Don’t worry—our setup wizard will guide you through each one to ensure everything is configured correctly and runs smoothly. Click here to start setting up Merchandise Optimization.

Connect Google Analytics
To track the performance of your products within your collections, we will enhance your Google Analytics tracking with additional data points. These are used to evaluate the effectiveness of your products relative to their placement, and ultimately to calculate a performance score by which to sort your products.
For this, we'll create a new GA4 property within your GA4 account to ensure we can push the data in the format needed, but also to avoid duplicating data in existing properties.
👉 Connect to your Google Analytics 4 account and select all permissions:
-
Authenticate Shopify
Based on individual performance scores, you can enable automatic sorting of your products within your collections. You can turn on the dynamic sorting on a per-collection basis, ensuring that your best-performing products get the visibility they deserve.

Implement Custom Pixel
Once your custom pixel is created, you can add it and start the collection tracking. Although this step involves working with code, no dev resources are required, just follow the steps below.
a. Copy the code of your custom pixel:
b. Open your Customer Events admin page in Shopify.
c. Click Add custom pixel and name it “RetentionX”
d. Configure Customer Privacy settings to respect your customers' preferences. We recommend the following setup; the pixel will automatically handle your customer's privacy settings and not send any customer data if consent has not been given.
e. Paste the code from above into the Code input box and save your changes.
f. Click Connect to complete the setup in Shopify.
g. Click Test to open the pixel on your website for testing.
h. Once you complete the pixel implementation, we'll verify if the custom pixel is embedded in your store. If we're unable to detect the custom pixel, please:- Wait a moment, as it might take some time for the first events to fire.
- Disable any ad blockers and try again.
- Double-check your pixel configuration.
Multi-Store Setup
If you have activated our Multi-Store Plus add-on, you'll additionally need to select the store you'd like to begin the setup process with. Of course, you can set up the functionality for all of your stores - just one by one.
Data Collection
Once setup is complete, we'll begin a 7-day data collection period to gather enough data to understand measure the performance of your products within collections. Once the learning phase is over (you'll be notified), you can turn on dynamic sorting for your collections.
